Decades long experience with a multitude of notable artists -- from his early days as accompanist to iconic vocalists Abbey Lincoln and Cassandra Wilson, on to his years as a member of M-Base Collective innovator Steve Coleman’s group and music director for the late great Kevin Mahogany, up to his current tenure with saxophonist Joe Lovano’s critically acclaimed nonet and Grammy nominated Us Five band -- has proven pianist/composer/arranger James Weidman to be one of the most versatile artists in music today and prepared him well for his steady emergence as an important bandleader in his own right.

Weidman’s versatility is evidenced in the wide ranging music of the various ensembles that he currently leads: The Aperturistic Trio (with bassist Harvey S and drummer Steve Williams) which explores his own cutting edge original compositions; The Rhythm Keepers (with Marvin Horne on guitar and Harvey S on bass), a group in the tradition of Nat King Cole’s classic trio that swings jazz standards out of the Great American Songbook; and Spiritual Impressions, an ensemble including singer Ruth Naomi Floyd that features him doubling on piano and organ performing his own stirring arrangements of gospel music out of the Black church. He also concurrently coleads the James Weidman-Steve Williams Quartet performing the Music of Clifford Jordan

During this FREE class, you will receive a Thorough Introduction into the world of Djembe Drumming:

> Hand and body positioning,

> The sounds the djembe makes,

> The language used in composing drumbeats,

> A song/drumbeat that can be universally applied and adapted to any drum circle.

> Come out a bonafide drummer after only once class!

No Drum?...NO WORRIES!  You do NOT need a Djembe Drum for this class. You can use anything with a flat surface, such as: an upside-down cardboard box, cooking pot or pan, water jug, a 5-gallon bucket/ lid, or the flat surface of a chair, coffee table, or TV tray, etc. Be Creative! Djembe Drum class teaches the hand movements & rhythms, so if/when you get a drum of your own, you will know all the movements/rhythms.

This one-week immersion program is an exciting opportunity for you to refine your jazz technique, grow your confidence and build community with other aspiring performers, ages 14-26, who identify as female or non-binary. You’ll work with professional jazz artists in individual lessons, small ensemble work and industry panel discussions.

This program runs daily July 6-July 11, 11AM-4:30PM EST with a 1 hr break.
