All About the Plays

The DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival’s full-length plays are divided into 3 groups; Traditional, Urban and Gospel Stage Plays. Over 300 plays were submitted for the Festival season, of which, only 100 full-length plays were selected.

 

The DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival holds fast in its commitment to provide quality theatre to all people, while maintaining a balance of richness and variety.  So whether you enjoy the works of August Wilson or Tyler Perry the DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival has something for you.

 

The New Works Reading Series

is designed to feature new and developing works by both emerging & established artists and serves as an incubator for dramatic works. The New Works Reading Series is a forum in which the artist can see their work on stage, collaborate with other professionals, & engage audiences in an open exchange of thoughts and ideas about their work. Attendance for this event is free, but attendees should register to reserve a seat.

The One Act Battle

is a 5-day competition divided into 4-categories; Drama, Comedy Adult Theme and Anything Goes. Each night the audience cast their votes to select the best plays of the evening. The winning play from each evening advances to the final round of the competition for the championship title. All plays in the One Act Battle are under strict guidelines and must be under 20 minutes in length.

The Monologue Competition

The DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival Workshops are a great way to immerse yourself in the world of theatre & art. Learn to build your acting skills through hands-on instruction in classes designed for beginning, intermediate & professional. Gain new skills and improve on your current ones as you learn from talented instructors. Specialty workshops and activities include; Auditioning,  Acting For Film and Stage, Improv, Stage Makeup, Costumes and so much more.

Sunflower Seeds: Conversations Overheard is a one-man play told in two scenes between two men who are vastly different, or are they? In the rich tradition of the unsung classic The Colored Museum, Sunflower Seeds: Conversations Overheard looks to blend elements of hip-hop and the Twilight Zone. Actor W. Ellington Felton serves as both griot, emcee, and channels the elements of Blues and Hip-Hop in an unflinching look at what happens to music when those who make it have lost their way, or have they?

Campaign 72 is one woman theatrical production, which explores the first African American Shirley Chisholm woman candidate for Democratic presidential nomination United States campaign amongst racial tension in 1972.

The African American Collective Theater is  a Washington, DC-based production company showcasing Black LGBTQ themes since 1976. Founding artistic director, Alan Sharpe.

 

 

 

Brave Soul Collective (BSC) is a Washington, DC based multi-disciplinary arts, education, and HIV/AIDS outreach organization working to illuminate the lives of LGBTQIA people of color through the performing and healing arts. BSC aims to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, by serving as a platform for open and honest discussion about prevention, stigma, and personal responsibility.

 

In addition to our stand alone productions, community discussions, and artist features, BSC regularly performs and presents workshops at HIV/AIDS conferences, as well as various LGBTQIA Pride, & community events.

Micah Powell is a writer, orator, poet, DJ, and community activist. Though a native of the DC area, he has traveled extensively with his work with the arts, outreach, and community building. Despite barely breaking 30, Micah Powell has been an influential voice all over the country for over 15 years.

 

He has captivated audiences with his colorful combination of words and music, intriguing monologues about civil rights, passionate pleas for peace as well as, his respect and appreciation for black women.
