In our expanded commitment to the development of new plays, the DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival presents our New Works Reading Series by new and emerging playwrights. Established in 1986, the series originally featured concert readings, providing playwrights an opportunity to work with a creative team of theatre professionals, while also offering audiences a first look at the work and a unique insight into the playwriting process. In the summer of 2010, the DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival expanded the program, renaming it the New Works Reading Series. This revamped series included workshops, productions, and interactive concert readings. After each performance, talk-backs with members of the artistic team are held to encourage dialogue between audiences and artists. Come join us, as we continue the search for the next new voice in the American theatre canon.
The New Works Reading Series is commitment to:
• Develop and produce powerful new plays
• Foster new playwrights
• Strengthen the national theatre field by supporting the work of emerging writers
• Establishing local theaters as key venues for launching original & compelling plays
• Introducing the world to the country’s brightest playwrights
