New Works

reading series

In our expanded commitment to the development of new plays, the DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival presents  our New Works Reading Series by new and emerging playwrights. Established in 1986, the series originally featured concert readings, providing playwrights an opportunity to work with a creative team of theatre professionals, while also offering audiences a first look at the work and a unique insight into the playwriting process. In the summer of 2010, the DC Black Theatre & Arts Festival expanded the program, renaming it the New Works Reading Series. This revamped series included workshops, productions, and interactive concert readings. After each performance, talk-backs with members of the artistic team are held to encourage dialogue between audiences and artists.
